Shared Legacy Farms - my CSA

My last post was just a photo of my first share!  Click here to read more about CSA.  Shared Legacy Farms in Elmore, OH has offered shares of their local food source (veggies and fruit), eggs and honey.  I signed up for the veggies and 1/2 share of eggs so I will get the eggs every other week.  Fruit was sold out!  Bummer on that one.

What can I say?

This is so exciting.  As someone that A)loves to eat, B) enjoys good, fresh, organic food C) likes to support local business, D) likes to eat food in season, E) just thinks this is a plain old good idea, why would I NOT do this?

The price was good and is about $21 per week for the season.  That is way less than I would usually spend on produce for the week and this is some good stuff!  The first week was a little skimpy, but they said it would be.  (I get email correspondence from our Farmers - how cool is that?).

The first week, we were offered mixed lettuces, pea shoots, arugula, and broccoli rabe (well my friend told me that's what it was) plus a potted herb of our choosing.  Now, you have heard me talk sh*t about arugula before, but this particular arugula from Elmore was so fresh and amazing, I could tolerate it.  The lettuces were incredible!  Super clean as well - which I appreciated.  Not one speck of dirt.  I am not sure what to do with broccoli rabe, but that's the fun of this share crop (plus they have suggestions, ideas and recipes on their website)!  Love it!

The veggies come in a box that you get to take home.  A nice, big, lightweight, plastic bin that you wash and bring back with you the next week so it can be refilled with the next round.

Thank you to DT for picking up our first box because I had to work late.  I hope I get to go next week.   I am so excited to see what's to come!  I will keep posting so you can see too!

Ahh! From your farmer friend, I am so happy for you! That is a lovely first week, and exactly what was in the shares doled out around here too. AND eggs and honey? you will never buy eggs from the store again once you get hooked on "real" eggs. 1/4 of the saturated fat and cholesteral of store bought eggs, and usually 4x the amount of beta charotene and vit A and E! What an exciting summer of eating you're gonna have! xoxo

Love this! I've been wanting to do this for a while.... But just haven't. I can't wait to see how your summer goes. Maybe it will help me make the leap.
