What you may not know about Sockeye Salmon

Shopping at The Fresh Market is always a treat for me.  They have coffee samples, classical music piped in from above, the produce is gorgeous as if from a magazine, and it's relatively calm in there with no over sized carts crowding the aisles.  It's like the spa of grocery shopping.  Ahh......

Last night I was at the fish counter and I just love talking the butcher about what's new and what's on special, yada yada.  You gotta have a relationship with your butcher, right?  If you didn't know, I used to work in the seafood department at Food Town way back in the day....and it was awesome, but smelly.   But so awesome.  The very excellent and knowledgeable gentlemen at TFM was educating me about sockeye salmon.

Apparently, sockeye salmon completely changes appearance when spawning.  Now, imagine some older gentleman telling me all about this over the top of the fishy counter.   It was awkward, but very interesting.  So, naturally, I consulted Wikipedia...it's true!

Check this out:
The top photo is an ocean sockeye and the bottom is a spawning sockeye.  SO WEIRD, RIGHT?!?!?!

You can learn even more about the sockeye salmon life stages here in photos.

I ordered the shrimp.  Picturing this was weirding me out.

Is your butcher's name, Sam, like in the Brady Bunch?

My first thought was, "You can get a good look at a butcher's ass...wait no...you can get a good look at a t-bone by sticking your head up a butcher's ass."

Next I thought of you listening to this man talk about spawning and I am surprised that you didn't go running out of there.
