Food Poisoning

On the last day of the month, the last NaPloMobononon, I wanted to write a profound, eloquent post.

I thought of a new topic.  Food Poisoning.  I was thinking about this the other day as I was leaving a particularly smelly bathroom wondering who had done that to this restroom at this time of the day (noon!).  I once had food poisoning and every time I told the story (yes, it was a funny story, so I had told it a few times), the reaction was the same.

"Did you call the restaurant?"

Um, what?  And.....HELL NO.

"You should have told them what you ate since it was obviously bad and they should stop serving it.  Maybe they would give you a free meal next time."

Let's discuss this and why I would never do it.

1)  Calling the restaurant and explaining what happened.  "Yes, Cracker Barrel*?  If you are wondering who destroyed your bathroom, well that was me.  Sorry about that....it was the mashed potatoes.  Yeah, yeah.  I ate all of them but they made me really sick.  Throw up?  Nope.  The other kind."

2)  Going back.  "Hi, I am the one who called and created the bio hazard in your restroom.  Yep.  I'll take my coupon now.  Thanks!  See you later!"

3)  Actually eating the food again.  "I'll take the mashe.....oh wait.  How about the chickinNdumplins?  Yeah-no.  I'll take the corn....oh wait, those taste like mashed potatoes too, right?  Come to think of it, this entire place looks and smells like mashed potatoes.  I sort of want to get sick now.  Does my coupon apply toward the General Store?"

*Note, nothing against Cracker Barrel, it was just the first restaurant that popped into my mind and it fit nicely with  my story.  Other restaurants that come to mind are Star Diner, PF Changs, and Hooters.  Ick.

Lazy Sunday Poll.....delayed

I forgot again!

Ok - here is the LAZY SUNDAY POLL....on Monday:

Be honest - have you blogged every day this month?

I double checked in my dashboard and I have, twice even on a few days, but I have to admit a few of those days were not quality - or just a picture.  I do remember the other night around 10pm saying, "CRAP!  I HAVEN'T BLOGGED YET TODAY!!!" like it was a national crisis or I had left my car running with it unlocked in the ghetto.

I loved the challenge of NaPLoMOBo (whatever) and felt I rose to the assignment.  I also loved seeing everyone's blog have something new on it every day and I really feel like it was a great way for us to communicate and get to know each other even better.  Even if I don't comment on everyone's blog every day, I really do read all the posts of those in my blog roll eventually.  I will sit down some nights and really catch up and I just love it.  I really do.  I LOVE IT.  Blogging is a passion and a hobby and even though some people don't get it....some people really do.  Thank you to those of you that do.

Good job everyone!  Well done.

Shots of the month

Take a look at these shots of the month as seen at 6-pack on Sylvania. This is a great bar but come on - all these shots look like they are going to give you a cavity upon consumption. What is purple poof? They all sound like slutty shots too. What ever happened to flaming Dr. Pepper, tequila and three wiseman?

I took a few days off this week - Wednesday, Thursday was the holiday, and I also took Friday off.  It has been so nice to be at home and with family!  I love relaxing and hanging out, starting or finishing projects and getting organized.  Breaks in college were fun but after the break, I felt like I needed a break.

Did you get a break?

Bridesmaid dress shopping - success!

Dress shopping was a total success!

I made an appointment with David's Bridal on a whim before our appointment with another local bridal boutique.  I was not expecting to be impressed but I was.  Not only was the staff knowledgeable and courteous, but the dress selection was quite extensive.  My bridesmaids (only two were with me for the first appointment) tried a few on and really liked two of them.  They were both great prices.  I mean really.

Next we hit the local boutique and didn't find anything that wowed us and also the dresses were double and triple the cost.  Plus you had to all get dressed and undressed in the same room.  Some people are ok with that, but I was not really.  As a modest person, I am not one to just whip off my shirt...even in front of my best friends and sisters.

So, we headed back to David's with everyone (save one bridesmaid who could not be there) and decided on a the short, strapless dress in truffle (which is chocolate brown for the layman).  Bonus:  they have pockets!

Click here to view the dress - it will open with red, so click on TRUFFLE.  I have to say, they look better in person.  I had seen this dress online and didn't give it a second thought, but in person, they look much nicer.

Success!  Thanks David.

Happy Thanksgiving

Whew!  Well, pretty much today is over.  Great day, great food, for some of us - great hangovers, and family.  What a wonderful concept....just hang out with your loved ones and have a wonderful meal that everyone contributes to and just ENJOY.

Happy Thanksgiving to you friends.  I hope you enjoyed.

Wedding Update

Not much new to report, but today my bridesmaids and I are going shopping for their dresses at Atlas on Monroe.  We are in search of cute chocolate brown cocktail style dresses that are not too "brides-maid-y."

I will let you know how it goes.

My wedding dress search has been online so far and I think I will go try on next month or so - with maybe one or two people NOT an entourage like what you see on Say Yes to the Dress (that gives me anxiety).

Just in time for Thanksgiving

Nevermind the terrible camera phone photo-- look what I just did all by myself!

Moving right along.....like molasses

Most of you know that I am getting married next year.   Most of you also know that I am one who is always trying to lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle.  Last year, I lost about 30 pounds and gained about 10 of those lovely little devils back in the summer.  Annoying.  I think losing weight and living a healthy lifestyle is a struggle or a constant effort for most people.  I find that I have to fight to stay on track but sometimes that is a fine line between staying on track and obsessing for me.

We started the biggest loser contest again at work in mid-September.  I have been losing weight consistently....at a freaking snail's pace.  Molasses runs faster.  Every week I lose .4, .2, .6, gain .2, lose .4 and so on.  Overall, I have lost 11 pounds since September so that is good -the scale is going down, right???

Here is where I want to scream though.  Sometimes I feel like I am making so many sacrifices, passing on the dessert ALL THE TIME, getting up early to pack my lunch EVERY DAY, finding time to work out when I don't feel like it, and so on.  Yes, I am losing weight, but for how hard I am trying, I feel like I would like to be losing more than less than half a pound a week.  Ok, ok, so I got drunk TWICE in two months, but believe me, that is a sacrifice.

Sometimes I feel like I am at the bottom of a mountain staring at the peak and thinking, I can't.  I just can't do it.  But I know I have to.  And I have to MY WHOLE LIFE.  It's not like after my wedding I can just start eating pizza every day and never pick up a dumbbell again.  I have to do this routine FOREVER.  It just seems insurmountable to me sometimes.

Bottom line - I need some inspiration.  And I don't mean posting pictures of swimsuit models on my fridge because let me tell you something - that shit does not work for me.  In fact, it makes me want to dive head first into a peanut butter jar and then root through the cupboards for the chocolate that I asked my amazing fiancee to hide for me.  Then back to the PB.  Maybe some potato chips now.....

Yes, the wedding is motivation, but it is still 11 months away.  Flat out, I need to do this for myself.  Not for an event, not for vanity, yes for health, but mostly just so I can climb this insurmountable hill made of stupid molasses and stay on the top.  Just to say I did it and I will never go back.

I'll start Friday.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Upcoming Movies...

Finally!!  Movies coming to a theater near you (that I actually want to see).  The cinema has been lacking for me in the last 6 months and now it's back on the upswing.  Here is a list of the flicks:

Burlesque:  Starring Christina Aguilera and Cher, you know that you will be impressed by the soundtrack and costuming if nothing else.  I'm thinking about Molin Rouge....
Release date:  November 24

Harry Potter!  Already in theaters, and already on this blog.  Can't wait to see it.

Faster:  Someone read my blog (this post in particular)!  Dwayne THE ROCK Johnson is back in action and kicking ass again and THANK THE LORD.  I was so tired of the kiddo movies he was wasting away in.  This movie features our hunk as an ex-con seeking revenge for his murdered brother - uh, yes please.
Release date:  November 24

The Chronicles of Narnia:  The Voyage of the Dawn Treader:  These are not the greatest movies ever made, but I love them and the books were some of the best stories ever written.  I read these stories as a kid and then again more recently and they are entertaining pictures (no where near as EPIC as LOTR, but then again, nothing is).
Release date:  December 10

The Tourist:  Johnny Depp - need we say more?  No pirates, no makeup, just Johnny in this movie that has been labeled a "paranoid thriller ."  Not sure what that means.  Everyone hates on the Ultimate Mistress Ms. Jolie, but she's fun to watch.  Admit it.
Release date:  December 10

Tron:  Sci-Fi, computer world, time travel, etc...  Are you excited or snoozing?  I love this garbage but I'm a nerd girl.  This is not a remake but rather a continuation of the 1982 Tron and Jeff Bridges returns as his same character.  The Dude abides.
Release date:  December 17

True Grit:  The Cohen Brothers version of a western novel which was previously made into a 1969 John Wayne movie.  I am guessing this movie will not be as straightforward as the typical western since the Cohen Brothers tend to mix it up a bit.  This movie has an impressive cast featuring Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, and Josh Brolin.
Release date:  December 22

Where did you go on your Honeymoon?

Where is your favorite vacation spot?

Some doche-bag just had the nerve to sing GnR and I will tell you the story later. I hate him.

November Wedding!

Heading to our 13th wedding of the year....

Congrats to Megan and Ronnie!

Ceremony at Zoar Lutheran and reception at Stranahan.

Don't think I won't be whipping out  my notebook and taking notes.

Have a great Saturday night!

Nail Polish

I hate red nail polish.  Well, I hate nail/toe polish in general.  I think it feels weird and I don't like the way it looks on me.  Other people have all these cool colors and match their outfits and stuff.  Not me.  I hate it.

The only thing I do like it a French Manicure and I feel like that's boring.

What's your color?

Deer just wants a beer

This happened last week, but I really wanted to post it.

BLUFFTON (Kylee!), OH, Luke's Bar and Grill.  This deer busts through the bar and destroys tables and chairs.  I feel bad for the deer, but it is sort of comical since no one was hurt and the deer got out safely.  It looks like the deer is on a pair of roller skates - poor thing.

Can you imagine what would have happened if this bar was full?  Or if it would have happened at 2am?  That would have been a bad scene.

Here is the news version:

Here is the YouTube Version that shows different angles from the bar.  Notice the bartender that gets ON TOP of the bar.

Did you know? Miscellaneous Tips....

I received this as an email and thought it contained some really good tips and stuff that I did NOT know - especially the windshield/eraser one.  Have fun.  **Also please excuse random formatting errors, this was an email as I mentioned and I didn't feel like wrestling with it any longer.**

Better Bananas

Take your bananas apart when you get home from the store.
If you leave them connected at the stem, they ripen faster.
Fresh Cheese
Store your opened chunks of cheese in aluminum foil.
It will stay fresh much longer and not mold!

Which Peppers?
Peppers with 3 bumps on the bottom are sweeter and better for eating.
Peppers with 4 bumps on the bottom are firmer and better for cooking.

Frying Beef
Add a teaspoon of water when frying ground beef.
It will help pull the grease away from the meat while cooking.

To really make scrambled eggs or omelets rich add a couple of
Spoonfuls of sour cream, cream cheese, or heavy cream; then beat them.

Garlic Strength
Add garlic immediately to a recipe if you want a light taste
Of garlic and at the end of the recipe if your want a stronger taste of garlic.

Reheat Pizza
Heat leftover pizza in a nonstick skillet on top of the stove; set heat to med-low
And heat till warm. This keeps the crust crispy. No soggy micro pizza. I saw this on the food channel and it really works.

Easy Deviled Eggs
Put cooked egg yolks in a zip lock bag. Seal; mash till they are all broken up Add remainder of ingredients, reseal, keep mashing it up mixing thoroughly, cut the tip of the baggy; squeeze mixture into egg. Just throw bag away when done - easy clean up.

Reheating refrigerated bread
To warm biscuits, pancakes, or muffins that were refrigerated, place them in
A microwave next to a cup of water. The increased moisture will keep the food
Moist and help it reheat faster.

Newspaper weeds away
Start putting torn newspaper in your plants, work the nutrients in your soil. Wet newspapers,
Put layers around the plants, overlapping as you go; cover with mulch and forget about weeds. Weeds will get through some gardening plastic; they will not get through wet newspapers.
Broken Glass
Use a wet cotton ball or Q-tip to pick up the small shards of glass you can't see easily.

Flexible vacuum
To get something out of a heat register or under the fridge add an empty paper towel roll or empty gift wrap roll to your vacuum. It can be bent or flattened to get in narrow openings.

Reducing Static Cling
Pin a small safety pin to the seam of your slip and you will not have a clingy skirt or dress. Same thing works with slacks that cling when wearing panty hose. Place pin in seam of slacks and ... Ta DA! ... Static is gone.

Measuring Cups
Before you pour sticky substances into a measuring cup, fill with hot water.
Dump out the hot water, but don't dry cup. Next, add your ingredient (peanut butter, honey, etc.) and watch how easily it comes right out.

Foggy Windshield?
Hate foggy windshields? Buy a chalkboard eraser and keep it in the glove box of your car When the windows fog, rub with the eraser!
Works better than a cloth!

Reopening envelope
If you seal an envelope and then realize you forgot to include something inside,
Just place your sealed envelope in the freezer for an hour or two. Viola! It unseals easily.

Use your hair conditioner to shave your legs. It's cheaper than shaving cream and leaves your legs really smooth. It's also a great way to use up the conditioner you bought but didn't like when you tried it in your hair

Goodbye Fruit Flies
To get rid of pesky fruit flies, take a small glass, fill it 1/2 with Apple Cider Vinegar
And 2 drops of dish washing liquid; mix well. You will find those flies drawn to the cup and gone forever!

Get Rid of Ants

Put small piles of cornmeal where you see ants. They eat it, take it 'home,' can't digest it so it kills them. It may take a week or so, especially if it rains, but it works and you don't have the worry about pets or small children being harmed!

Lazy Sunday Poll....delayed

Shoot!  I tried to start a tradition and I failed...the FIRST week.  Ok, so I will post this on TUESDAY but I will try harder next week I promise.

Sunday (Tuesday) Poll:

What is your current favorite TV show?

For example, if you did not have DVR - what show would you schedule your life around??

For me, it is Modern Family.  I just love it and it always makes me laugh.  It used to be 24.  Sigh.  I miss Jack.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1

HP7 comes out this Friday, November 19th!!!  EEEE!  So exciting.

I can tell you that I am really happy they split this book into two movies because there was just so much and also because I am not ready for these to be over.  Seriously.

 Are you excited??

Tonight we are going to DMK Burger Bar (apparently Burger Bars are ALL THE RAGE in Chicago right now).  You can build your own burger, turkey burger, tuna burger, and the toppings are endless.

Check out the menu here.

Chicago is amazing.

I owe you a TSO review. I have not forgotten.

Going to see TSO tonight at Huntington Center!  YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

Have you seen TSO?  It is like a mix of Christmas music and Metallica.

Yeah, it's that awesome.  Review tomorrow.

Halloween 2010

Better than never!  Here are some of my pics from Halloween.  Yes, I had many ideas for my non-slutty costume this year and the winner was the Travelocity Gnome.  I memorized his little ditty, sewed a cap and beard (and eyebrows), and bought a khaki coat that I dyed blue.  I was very happy with my costume and found myself doing gnome-like things all night like hiding stuff in my friend's cupboard, playing little pranks, and yes, hiding in the bushes.

Here is Jose Cuervo:
My sister, Katy Perry:
Mr. President and the First Lady:
Papa Smurf:

Magnum PI (and yes, his shorts were REALLY short):

Kenny Powers, FLO from Progressive Insurance and Magnum:
 DJ Lance (Yo Gabba Gabba):
Maximum Meridius Desimus (why yes, I was the only one at the party that knew his full name, and NO I don't think that's nerdy)
The winners of the costume contest - MILI VANILI
This is D*#K in a box.  He said it was heavy!  haha
Here's me hiding in the bushes acting very gnome-like.  Dededededededede!

Deuce Bigalow, Toledo Gigalo

On Saturday night, we went to see ROB SCHNEIDER at Connxtions (yes, that is how it is spelled....ghetto!) Comedy Club.  I was so excited - Rob Schneider was a part of the SNL cast that WE grew up with:  Adam Sandler, Mike Meyers, Chris Farley, Chris Rock, Dana Carvey, David Spade, Kevin Nealon - arguably the funniest time of SNL - at least for me.

Rob did not disappoint.  He was great!  Thank God we were in the back because my laugh is so loud and I just really cannot help it.  I really can't.  I really enjoy seeing actors do stand up because they can get real in person.  He was quick witted, had great stories and opinions, and just funny.  He does wonderful impressions and talked about being short quite often (which he is, and which I love).  He shut down this girl that was sort of heckling him but mainly she would just not shut up.  Why in the world do people in the audience feel the need to comment when there is a professional in the room?  I love it when they get put idiots their place.

This guy has my dream job.  It seems like he started just screwing around with Adam Sandler, they just took it up a notch, then BAM, they are stars...and get paid a sh*#load for it.  Incredible.

I am also following him on Twitter now.  He's FUNNY!   He tweeted:  "
I would think Paris Hilton would make part of her assistant's job requirement to carry her drugs for her! That's what mine does!"

Look at all the stuff Rob has done.  Click here for his IMDB listing.

Yes, of course we stayed to get our picture with him!  Here it is:

My Big Friggin' Wedding

Not mine (well, it kind of is...), but there is a show on Vh1 called My Big Friggin' Wedding.  I have this question to ask:

Are you kidding me?

Great, another show giving the American public an excuse to act like complete buffoons while planning the most important day of their lives.  Another show glorifying horrendous, self absorbed behavior and creating faux-celebrities who should be focusing on getting jobs and contributing to society.  These people are so obsessed with themselves they are forgetting that they should be forming a foundation for their marriage and, yes, this is a marriage - a sacrament - not throwing a ball and acting like debutantes.   There is once scene where a couple is picking out stationery and obviously disagreeing and she calls him a douchebag.  A douchebag!  I know I should be laughing at how ridiculous this show is but it is just so horrible and disrespectful, I have a hard time.  Plus, I think it is making my job worse.

Being in the wedding and event industry, I see a lot of this kind of behavior and it's not funny in person.  It actually is sad and bothersome.  Entitlement and self-centered-ness are, to me, completely out of control.  Most people do not have manners and certainly do not understand boundaries.

It really is unfortunate that a show highlighting couples that actually SHOULD be getting married would not get ratings.  Or maybe a show that would give a wedding of their dreams to a deserving couple?  I would watch that.  Most people would not.

Here is a link to My Big Friggin' Wedding.  The only person on this show that I sort of like is Johnny Meatballs for obvious reasons - comedic relief.  If you are saying to yourself , this looks exactly like Jersey Shore, points for you, it's by the same producer.

Lazy Sunday Poll

Since we are all so good and have been so on top of our commitment to Nablomoewhatever, I wanted to take this opportunity to get some polling done and maybe start a weekly of my own.

This today's poll:

Do you take vitamins?  What kind?  Do you think they really do anything?

Currently, I take a 2 a day multivitamin for active people (aka metabolism boosting).  I was nervous about it so I actually took the bottle into my doctor and she approved it.  She also recommended taking Vitamin C daily since everyone is sick all the time (exaggeration, but it seems that way in an office).  The Doc told me that if you take too much Vitamin C, your body just gets rid of it via urine.  So, basically, you cannot OD on the C.

I would really like to switch to the Gummy Bear kind.  I think I would enjoy vitamins more.  I have always hated swallowing pills and they get stuck in my throat 10% of the time forcing me to panic and down about 20oz of water.  It's terrifying.

Lily's at Levis

Levis Commons really is a sweet place to eat, shop, and hang out.  I have been to the Comedy Club several times, Bar Louie is a favorite, you can find half-off sushi several nights of the week there, and they have many great shops to offer and some by local owners.

Take, for example, Lily's.  Lily's at Levis is a fabulous shop that is loaded with things to decorate your home and unique and interesting gifts.  Things you will find there:  wall art, ornaments, soaps and lotions, jewelry, throws, pillows, lamps, sparkly things, night lights, cute hanging signs, clearance cubby (love this!) and of course CHRISTMAS stuff!  Once a month, they have a local designer in the shop to advise you on home decoration if you bring in a pillow or piece of art from your house.  How cool is that?

Next time you are at Levis, pop into Lily's and browse the shop.  Take at least two passes over the shop -- you will never be able to see everything it has to offer in one trip.

Kind of puts you in your place...

Check out this story from Yahoo! News:

Get over the fact that the title is poorly written and read the article. These people are incredibly selfless and inspiring.  Warning:  Some of the lines just miiiight choke you up depending on your mood and present state of mind.  Or maybe if you are just a human person.  Violet has recently undergone cancer treatments and according to her husband Allen:

"That money that we won was nothing," her tearful husband, Allen, told Patricia Brooks Arenburg of the Nova Scotia Chronicle Herald. "We have each other."

OMG.  Tissue.

Look - it's my cousin!

Subway - eat stale?

Don't get me wrong - I love Subway and since I almost never eat at a fast food restaurant anymore, Subway is my saving grace when I forget my lunch or don't have time to pack.

My current sub:
Roasted Chicken on Whole Wheat
No Cheese
All veggies, no cucumbers
No banana peppers
Add Jalapenos
Franks Red Hot

Oh yeah.  That's the ticket.

To all you sandwich artists out there - if a sandwich does not get cheese - don't toast it.  Toasting is only good if it melts that delicious cheese.  If you toast it and there is no cheese benefit, you wind up with a stale, crunchy bread that is like day old crap.  I like the Subway bread because it is nice and soft, not crunchy and stale.  Another reason why toasting sucks, is because the crumbs go everywhere.  They do.  I think they grow wings as you bite into your sandwich and fly into your hair, down your shirt and into your drink.  It's annoying.

So, STOP asking me if I want it toasted - because CLEARLY....I do not.

I heard on Bob and Tom this morning that Wakefield Track and Field's team in Massachusetts was getting some press yesterday since their shirts read, of course...WTF.

I guess the superintendent didn't know that this stands for something else now and the parents are upset.

Article here.  Fox's article here.  I found this line describing said acronym, very amusing: "popular but vulgar Internet colloquialism."  Popular but vulgar.  Classic.

I think they should sell all contraband on eBay as a giant fundraiser.  The flag is amazing (see below).

Super Shady Piece of Mail

A few days ago I received a notice in the mail letting me know that my polling location had switched.  Odd - I have not moved but maybe they changed locations due to the school's structure or something.  Ok, fine.

I went to the "new" location and the sweet, sweet old man at the desk told me I was in the wrong location.

"Is this your first time voting, honey?"  God Bless you, no.
"You have to go to Precinct J."  Of course I do. My original polling location.

I headed back to the car and rolled over to the other place which was now crawling with grade schoolers (who scare me because they are rude and are often way taller than I am).  They say weird things and intimidate the crap out of me.  I hate it.

I asked the cute, even older guy over there about the sketchy piece of mail.  He told me that he was wondering if anyone had gotten this fake notice and turned to his stack of papers and pulled out an official looking flyer that explained the situation.

Adjusts glasses..."You see, each political party has been sending registered voters of the other party these fliers.  They look like they are from the board of elections, but they are not.  No-sirree, they are not.  These folks figure that if you went to the wrong place, you will give up and not vote.  But good for you dear, you did your civic duty!"

Isn't that crazy?

I will scan this literature and upload so you can see it.  So crazy - I am sort of blown away by this.

I read an article in Self, or Shape or some other self-loathing magazine advising it's readership to drink water at different temperatures at different times throughout the day to boost metabolism.

Ok - let's give it a shot.  Why the hell not?

In the am, you are supposed to drink hot water with a squeeze of real lemon and lemon zest (use the microplane - it rocks).  Surprise - I love this.  Before lunch and all meals, lukewarm water.  No surprise - this is boring as shit.  Iced water the rest of the day.  Done.

I've lost 8 pounds in 3 days.  KIDDING.  I can see the philosophy behind this and it gives me something to do at work :)

Have a ZESTY day!

Ok - I'm IN!  Silly peer pressure.

NaBloPoMo is National Blog Posting Month and I will attempt to post every day.

A little voice in my head says, "Do or do not, there is no try."

Here we go!
