Baby Shower Question

I feel that I have perfected the wedding gift buying (and amount that is appropriate to spend and all the rules, etc...). However, what about baby showers?

These are less frequent for me, although having attended at least 22 weddings in the past 5 years, these suckers are going to start poppin' out everywhere (showers, not babies, er....).

So, what do I spend on a gift? What are the different levels? Friend, close friend, family, close family? Opinions please (especially you Mothers).

I have no idea, and would be interested in what other people have to say!

Just follow the gift registry. It really doesn't matter how much you spend. ALL of that stuff is important. If you buy something that you feel you'd like to spend more, throw in a package of Pampers Swaddlers diapers and you are GOLDEN.

yes, follow the registry! but, if you're going to go all rogue and buy clothes a few guidelines: don't buy newborn sizes, the new parents will probably have so many newborn clothes...try to go at least 3-6 months or higher...but try to think what season baby will be that age (see why it's easier to stick to the registry? haha)

and i'm w/ nadja...throwing in some diapers is always a plus. :)

I do not have a set spending level it depends on my relationship with the mother\family. I like others have said always throw in diapers.
My cousin was given a baby diaper cake it was so cool!! Here are instructions I found online: http://www.howtomakeadiapercake.com/?hop=batgu

I agree. I'm a registry follower. I've had a lot of friends who've ended up not getting what they really NEEDED (and wanted!) when folks deviated from the list.

I think the amount of money for the gift is TOTALLY regional. I think $35-$50 is kosher. Sometimes with family gifts we all go in to get a big 'ole expensive stroller or something...

But seriously, WHATEVER YOU GIVE, the baby mama will be appreciative, I bet.

Janis, I have NEVER seen a diaper cake, but I looked it up and it really is a cute idea. I think I will make one. Of course, if I do, I bet 5 other ladies will show up with a bigger, better looking cake.

Yep,I love baby showers and I think you can spend whatever your budget allows. If it is a close family member I go with something bigger and maybe a bit more personal. The great thing is you can get alot of the little less expensive things and make a great gift basket and it doesn't break the bank. I think I am always willing to spend a little more on a baby shower gift because I love them so much!

P.S. I LOVE when people give books to the new baby instead of a card. I think that's a cute idea. Then just write to the baby from Een. They'll have it for forever. (Or until they lose it.)
